**UMPIRE INTERPRETATION:**

**Factors to Consider:**

3. **Direction:** Is it directed at opponent/officials?
4. **Content:** What is being said?
5. **Context:** Game situation and match importance
6. **Pattern:** Repeated behavior or one-time occurrence?

**Progressive Enforcement:**
1. **First Minor Instance:**
- Verbal warning (often quiet/informal)
- "Please moderate your celebration"

- Possible disqualification for persistent behavior

**SPECIFIC SCENARIOS:**

**Scenario 1: Player pumps fist and shouts "YES!" after crucial point**
- **Ruling:** Acceptable
- Brief, not directed at opponent, normal emotional expression

**Scenario 2: Player yells "COME ON!" repeatedly for 5 seconds**
- **Ruling:** Warning (first time), Yellow card if repeated
- Duration excessive, may be intimidating

**Scenario 3: Player screams and throws racket after losing point**
- **Ruling:** Immediate yellow card
- Combines multiple violations

**Scenario 4: Player uses profanity audible to spectators**
- **Ruling:** Immediate yellow card
- Profanity not tolerated regardless of context

**Scenario 5: Player celebrates match point win enthusiastically**
- **Ruling:** Generally acceptable
- Winning match allows slightly more emotion
- Still must not insult opponent

**CULTURAL CONSIDERATIONS:**

**Different Styles:**
- Some playing cultures more expressive
- Some players naturally louder
- Umpire must apply standards consistently

**Fair Application:**
- Same standards for all players
- Don't penalize one player while allowing another
- Cultural differences don't excuse rule violations

**INTIMIDATION VS. EXPRESSION:**

**Key Difference:**
- **Acceptable:** Celebrating own success
- **Unacceptable:** Attempting to intimidate opponent

**Red Flags for Intimidation:**
- Direct eye contact with opponent during shout
- Gestures toward opponent
- Repeated pattern targeting opponent
- Comments about opponent's play

**SPORTSMANSHIP EXPECTATIONS:**

**Positive Conduct:**
- Respect opponent at all times
- Brief, genuine emotional expressions
- Celebrate own success, not opponent's failure
- Acknowledge good shots from opponent
- Maintain composure

**Negative Conduct:**
- Mocking opponent
- Extended gloating
- Provocative gestures
- Disrespecting officials
- Throwing equipment

**COACHING CONDUCT:**

**Coaches Must:**
- Remain seated during play (unless authorized timeout)
- Not coach during rallies
- Not make loud exclamations
- Not criticize opponent or officials
- Set positive example

**Coach Violations:**
- Warning to player
- Yellow card charged to player
- Coach may be removed from playing area

**SPECTATOR MANAGEMENT:**

**Umpire Authority:**
- Can request spectators moderate behavior
- Ask for quiet during play
- Request removal of disruptive spectators
- Consult referee for serious issues

**LIVE SCORING INTEGRATION:**

**Record:**
- Yellow/red cards with specific violation
- Time of incident
- Score when violation occurred
- Pattern of behavior across match

**Notes:**
- Helps identify patterns
- Useful for post-match review
- May affect future seeding/entry

**BALANCING EMOTION AND CONDUCT:**

**Philosophy:**
- Table tennis allows emotional expression
- But must maintain respect and sportsmanship
- Brief celebration appropriate
- Excessive or directed behavior penalized

**Player Education:**
- Understand what's acceptable
- Know consequences of violations
- Develop self-control
- Channel emotion positively

**ENFORCEMENT CONSISTENCY:**

**Umpire Training:**
- Clear guidelines for violations
- Consistent application
- Document all warnings and cards
- Communicate clearly with players

**Match Control:**
- Early clear warnings prevent escalation
- Consistent enforcement maintains order
- Fair application builds respect
- Don't let match "get away" from control
