Complete rules for net touches, let calls, edge balls, and when rallies are replayed or scored.
Net and let rules determine when rallies are replayed or scored:
**NET TOUCH BASICS**
**Ball Touches Net During Rally:**
- **Result:** Play continues (no let)
- Ball remains live
- Rally proceeds normally
- Even if ball barely clears net
**Ball Touches Net During Service:**
- **If service otherwise legal:** LET - replay service
- **If service also faulty:** Fault, point to receiver
- No limit on service lets
**WHAT IS A LET?**
A let means the rally is stopped and replayed with no point scored.
**WHEN TO CALL LET:**
**Service Let:**
1. Ball touches net during service but lands correctly
2. Service otherwise legal (correct toss, bounce, etc.)
3. No limit - can have multiple lets in a row
**Receiver Not Ready:**
- Receiver clearly not ready before service
- Receiver signals appropriately before service begins
- Only allowed once per service without penalty
**Disturbance:**
- External disturbance affects rally
- Ball from another table enters court
- Sudden loud noise
- Spectator interference
- Lighting failure
**Umpire/Official Intervention:**
- Umpire stops play for safety
- Umpire sees equipment violation
- Time for consultation needed
- Correction of scoring error
**Ball Breaks:**
- Ball cracks or breaks during rally
- Affects ball flight or bounce
- Rare but requires let
**EDGE BALLS ("THE EDGE")**
**What is the Edge?**
- The vertical sides of the table
- Where horizontal playing surface meets vertical side
- Painted edge lines
**Edge Ball = Good:**
- Ball hits the edge → GOOD, play continues
- Counts as hitting the table
- No let called
- Rally proceeds
**How to Tell:**
1. **Sound:** Distinctive "ping" or sharp sound
2. **Ball Direction:** Ball often shoots off at sharp angle
3. **Visual:** Ball contacts edge area
**Umpire's Call:**
- If umpire certain ball hit edge: Good
- If uncertain: Benefit to striker
- Cannot call edge ball out if any doubt
**SIDE OF TABLE**
**Pure Side = Out:**
- Ball hits vertical side surface only → OUT
- Ball completely misses top edge
- Point to opponent
**Difficult Judgments:**
- Edge vs. side is often very close
- When in doubt, benefit goes to striker
- Umpire must have clear view
**COMMON LET SCENARIOS:**
**Scenario 1: Service clips net, lands in correct court**
- **Call:** Let
- **Action:** Replay service
- **Note:** No matter how many times this happens
**Scenario 2: Ball hits net during rally and goes over**
- **Call:** Play continues, no let
- **Action:** Rally proceeds normally
- **Note:** This is NOT a let in rally
**Scenario 3: Ball hits edge and bounces off table**
- **Call:** Good, play continues
- **Action:** Rally proceeds, edge is part of table
- **Note:** Distinctive sound and angle
**Scenario 4: Player claims ball broke during rally**
- **Call:** If ball visibly damaged, let
- **Action:** Replace ball, replay point
- **Note:** Umpire inspects ball
**Scenario 5: Spectator's phone rings loudly during point**
- **Call:** Usually play continues unless player clearly distracted
- **Action:** If distraction obvious, may call let
- **Note:** Umpire discretion
**WHAT IS NOT A LET:**
**Play Continues:**
1. Net touch during rally (not service)
2. Ball hits edge (edge is good)
3. Player grunts or shouts
4. Minor distractions not affecting play
